[How To] Boot Games Off USB (External Hard Drive) With Playstation 2 (PS2)

Foreword:  After a year and a half later, I have decided to re-write this guide, because honestly, it was not my own and it was presented very poorly.  Remember, I do no support piracy. Use the USB method to play your games on the hard drive to help your PS2 laser last longer.  The performance will vary, but that is up to you if you want to stick with it.  Good luck! IMPORTANT NEWS (5-1-10): It seems that there are a lot of dishonest users on the Internet that are copying this guide without giving credit back to me, Versatile. Because of this, I will be looking to update all the pictures in this article to have a watermark.  We have an active team scouring the net for those who have copied this article. If caught, we will be forced to take action against you. This is your warning. – Versatile

Revisions:

[Update: 1/15/08] I have gotten Viewtiful Joe 2 to copy to my hard drive, and I was able to boot off the hard drive and play it on the PS2. Now my laser will live longer! All help will be given in the comments as usual.

[Update 2/13/08] Added link to SKS Apps.  Without that site, this tutorial is nothing. :)

[Update 7/13/08] Added 2 new youtube videos of my own!

[Update 11/25/08]  I am so frickin sick of people asking why their game doesn’t work and all they see is a black screen.  Is it because your game isn’t compatible? Check out this list below and stop whining, or use swap magic and ditch the whole USB hard drive all together.  The USB 1.1 performance IS NOT WORTH IT in my eyes.

Introduction

The PS2 is a great console. After 9+ years, it is still going strong. With the new $99 price point, more and more people are getting the PS2 to play old school PS2 games. What better way to preserve your games and your PS2 laser than playing off the USB interface?  This guide is based off of Swap Magic implementation.

Wait, you can play games off the USB interface?

Yes, you can but it requires some work.  Here are the PROs and Cons:

Pros

  • Uses USB 1.1 interface (slow but better than nothing).
  • Saves strain on PS2 laser because using USB interface for game playing.
  • Can have a list of selectable games in the USBExtreme interface.
  • Works on both fat and slim PS2.
  • Novelty factor is awesome!

Cons

  • Game compatibility is low.
  • Requires USB hard drive.  Highly recommend USB drives that have their own power adapter.
  • Flash drives can work , but the performance is so horrible its not worth doing it.
  • Need to have third party tool to launch the “boot CD”.  This can be done with modchip, swap magic, or exploited memory card.
  • DVD9 games (like God of War 2) are larger than 4.4 GB and will not work with USBExtreme.

What tools do I need to make this work?

Hardware/Software tool: You need to have at least one of the items below before we continue:

  • Modchip
  • Swap Magic
  • Exploited memory card (such as Free McBoot)

IMPORTANT: For this guide, I will be using Swap Magic 3.6 CD to boot the USBExtreme disc!

Blank Media:

  • 1 CD-R (700MB is fine)

Note: I highly suggest swap magic if you are unwilling to mess with the other options.  You can learn more about swap magic at this guide:

http://versatile1.wordpress.com/2008/01/05/how-to-find-swap-magic-for-ps2/

Download the Software below (more detailed instructions to follow):

Usb Xtreme:  Link [Optional. Get this if you want to use the graphical user interface for easier format/game installing.]

Usb Advance: Link [This is required.]

What should I use for the USB mass storage device?

This is what I recommend:

  • USB 2.0 hard drive that uses its own power supply (for example, it requires power from the outlet).
  • A USB hard drive that is at least 10 gigs or larger is highly recommended.  The average PS2 game size will vary from as low as 282 MB up to as high as 4483 MB or 4.483 GB.
  • Do not use laptop external hard drives which gets its power from the PS2 USB 1.1 port.  It is not enough power.
  • You could use pen or usb flash drives, but performance will be horrible.  The game will chug, and you will have ridiculously long load times, that is, if your game can load!

Note: I understand when going through this tutorial, you may see that your PS2 may not see your USB hard drive enclosure. If that is the case, please try a different USB hard drive. I have people verifying this may fix the issue.

Tutorial Begins here *drools*:

  • Extract the USB Advance zip file that you downloaded earlier into its own folder.  You will see contents like the screenshot below:

usb tutorial ps2_1

  • Now double-click the USBAdvance-PC-Software.  You will see two programs inside it: ul_format.exe and ul_install.exe.  Extract these to your C:\.  This will make more sense later.
  • Notice there is a .bin and a .cue file.  The .cue file is 1KB, and the .bin file is 34 MB.
  • You need to burn the image file.  Use Nero, PowerIso, Alcohol120%, ImgBurn, or any other type of CD burning software and burn this image file to your blank CD-R disc.  Once the CD-R is burnt, label it and set that disc aside.
  • Now extract the other zip file called “USBExtreme_wininst” to its own folder.  You will now have a program called USBExtreme.exe.  A dedicated section to this program will be covered later in this tutorial.

Now go to preparing the USB hard drive step.

Preparing the USB hard drive:

  • Insert USB hard drive to your PC.
  • It is important that the USB hard drive is FAT32. If it is not, go to My Computer, right click the USB drive, and go to quick format for FAT32.
  • If your hard drive is FAT32, great. No need to format it again.
  • You can also launch the USBExtreme Software, go to the format tab, and tell it to format your USB drive as well as shown below:
usb extreme format

Here the I: drive is my USB drive.

Note: If you want, but not required, you can use the ul_format.exe command to format your USB hard drive.  This is how to use it:

  • Go to Start -> Run.
  • Type “cmd” and press enter.
  • Go to your C:\ root.
  • The command to use the program is “ul_format X format” where X is your USB hard drive.
  • Example: My USB hard drive is E:.  I would type “ul_format E format”.

We are almost done.  Let’s enable fast transfer speeds on your USB drive before we start copying games.

Enabling fast USB hard drive transfer speeds:

  • Go to My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->Disk Drives->(external one here)->Properties->Policies->Optimize for performance. Speed varies from from 1MBps to about 10-15MBps, which is pretty fast! Also, do not forget to unplug the device the proper way (that is Unplug or eject hardware) when you remove the USB drive!

Installing games onto your USB hard drive:

This is pretty easy.  We have two methods.  Method one uses the “ul_install.exe” command, and method 2 uses the USBExtreme.exe windows software.  Both programs do the same job, and the second program is easier to use for those who are novices. :)

Method 1:  Using the command line

  • Insert your PS2 game into your computer’s DVD drive.
  • Go to Start -> Run.
  • Type “cmd” and press enter.
  • Navigate to your C:\> drive.
  • The command to use here is “ul_install SourceDrive TargetDrive GameName CD/DVD”.

Example:

  • I insert Viewtiful Joe PS2 game into my computer.  To verify if your game is CD or DVD format, right click on the disc and go to properties.  If the file size is less 700MB or less, then it is CD format. Anything else and it is DVD.
  • My DVD drive has letter H:\>.  My USB drive is I:\>.
  • At the command prompt on my C:\> drive, I type “ul_install H I ViewtifulJoe DVD”.  Press enter and it will start copying the game.  See picture below:

cmd1

cmd2

  • Here it will copy the game from my DVD drive to my USB drive and prepare it in the special USB game playing format.

Method 2:  Using the USBExtreme Windows Software

Launch the software. Insert your game.  Configure the “Gamer Installer” window for your game and click start. It will start ripping the game.

Example:

My DVD drive is letter H.  My USB drive is I.  The name of my game is The Bouncer. The type of disc I am ripping from is DVD.

usbextreme 1

After you click Start, it will prompt you:

start install

Click Yes, and then it will start ripping the game from DVD drive to the USB hard drive:

install game

When the rip is done, you will see a screen like the one below:

copied game

Repeat the process over and over for additional games and you will get a list as shown below.  When you load the USB drive from the PS2, this list will be selectable.

dead or alive 2 hardcore

Finally you are done. Let’s play on the PS2!

  • Turn on PS2.  Load your Swap Magic CD disc.
  • At the main Swap Magic screen, load your USB Advance CD-R that you burnt earlier.
  • Now you will be at the USBExtreme screen.
  • Connect USB hard drive to PS2.  Turn it on, within a few seconds, you will see your game(s) show up on the screen. Highlight your desired game, press “X”, and within 7 seconds your game will load! Enjoy!

Troubleshooting

1) Make sure to make your USB hard drive partition a primary. I am not sure if it needs to be logical drive, but I made my drive a primary partition.

  1. Hi, Can you load the downloaded iso images into the hard drive instead of the PS2 DVD games? If you can, how do u have to do it?

  2. Thank you for your reply, but I have a problem installing the USB ADVANCE into the playstation. I don’t know how to do this. When I burn the usb advance image and put it in the ps2 it says please insert a playstation 2 format disk. Is it somethig wrong with the CD or image or what is it that doesn’t let me boot with the cd and use the usb advance? Please reply thank you.

  3. Hi, I don’t have swapmagic but I have a modchip card with Freemcboot that loads backup games. So is it possible to load it wth free Mcboot? If so how do I have to do so it can start the cd?

    • Hey This Is Shivendra and i am here to tell you that See if you have modchip then you can play any ps2 compatible CD or DVD and as you have said that if your ps2 says please insert ps2 format disk then
it is because you might haven’t burned it correctly of the files you have downloaded(usb advance) are corrupt and if then too it won’t work the i am gonna tell you that USB Advance Has A Problem i.e it doesn’t run on most of the ps2 and to run it you have to do some settings , refer to video

in this video i am showing that there is a option called Macrovision Fix , you have to turn it off to run USB ADVANCE

    • Dear Shawn, I dunno this thread is still in your interest, but why to boot the cd in freemcboot moded ps2? just copy the elf file from the cd (or extract it from .bin image) directly to your usb hdd/stick, then you can run it with uLaunchELF (get to filebrowser then mass: or hdd:). If you still have questions reply to this please.

  4. hi i fallow you say but when i load swapmagic it does not work?
one more i ask you “i saw your video in yor browe you have all programs like swap magic, USB advance, OPL ela.. how do you do? pleas could you tell me?” thank you.

  5. I already have games saved on my external hdd in iso format patched with esr disk patcher. How do i run these games with open ps2 loader or usb advance?

  6. will try that thanks! I also have an 1tb external hdd and am running windows 7 i have formatted hdd to fat32 but after transferring it with usb extreme, open ps loader doesnt show/ recognise any games . Any idea what to do? Thanks

    • How big is the partition size? Try a small partition like 30 gb and go from there. Make sure it is a primary partition. Use usb extreme to format that partition.

      • I partitioned it to 300gig and formatted with with usb extreme and it works now. Thanks for all the great advice and videos. Its awesome!!

  7. Hi mr. Versatile i think your tutorial need more explanation you miss to configure opl setting after the first load and much more. I was download a ver of opl.8 u gave it is link in youtube video and guss what it is ver.7. anyway thnx for your effort, and i have a problem like Nishal the question how to partition my USB HDD i have WDD 1 TB and anthor Q: how to use ul_install coz when i load the program it disappear.
And the last problem i get more than 1 partition of game SLUS when i use usbxtreme.
waiting for your reply and thank u again.

    • partitioning your hdd is such a simple thing……i dont that needs to be added onto the tutorial……i guess you should GOOGLE a bit about that. Anyways in shortcut right click my computer->disk management–> right click hdd–> shrink—>right click unallocated area—>new simple volume……DONE!!!. GOOGLE a bit for detail…..

ul_install is a cmd batch file…..i is not intended to run in gui….you to have run it through cmd and specify various options with it….i think you should better use the usb extreme tool to format your hdd partition to FAT 32….

NOTICE—-partitions above 32gb cannot be formatted to fat 32 directly….you need to use the usb extreme tool to do it….

you get more than one file of your ripped games because you cannot use a file more than 4gb in a fat 32 drive. Since some ps2 games are more than 4gb in size……the software automatically splits the game into more than one file (1gb each).

      • thnx for the info i already done with this i get everything to work fine but as u mention u can’t shrink the volume when u run your device in FAT-32 i don’t know about Win XP coz i use Win 7, another thing the partition of the game slus also divided to more than 1 part when the HDD in ntfs system, we need to clear more facts about this, i think Versatile can put more videos to show the true steps without getting any interrupted process.

        my respect.

        • What are you guys talking about? Fat32 partition can be shrunk if you really want to. I highly suggest you go to youtube.com/gamedexterity, go to the ps2 modding playlist, and watch everything there to become the PS2 master.

    • See this video for opl v.8:

    • If your device is already in FAT 32 then why to shrink it……..just rip games to it……dont worry if a game has more than 1 file…….it is 200% normal!!!!!

  8. hi my hero, i have one question to ask you i saw your video screen in your brower you have HDLoader, sawp magic, USB advance, Free Mcboote ….. how can i have its?

  9. hi can you help me, i my PS2 fat want me to backup. how to backup?

  10. I’m going to run dis method for d very 1st time so do i need to tweak any changes in my ps2 or directly insert d cd&usb nd play d game !! And what is tat opl?? is tat method is necessary in all conditions..b’coz i hav my modded ps2, usb advance cd and usb !!do i need anythin more than this ???

  11. Hello,

I have a PS2 Slim (SCPH 75004). The console is chipped, so it plays every dvds. I’ve also blocked the three sensors, but still not able to play games from usb hdd.
I’m using SwapMagic 3.6. It boots up normally, then I change the disk to usb advance, connecting the hdd via usb, and it says “not a valid ps2 disc”. Then I tried with Ulaunchelf instead of usb advance, but the situation is the same.. The disc spins up for a sec, then it says “not a valid ps2 disc”. What else should I do? My hdd is formatted with usb extreme, I’ve stored games on it with usb extreme.. Any ideas? Thanks!

  12. 1. Will this work with the 90001? How about the 50001?
    2. Which version of Swap Magic is needed to run it on the 90001?
    3. What is the latest version of Swap Magic? Their website lists 3.6 as being the latest, but 3.8 is listed on mod-chip.com’s website.
    4. I really only want this to play games that require the hard drive attachment, but support for it ended with the 50001, and the PS3 has never fully supported every PS2 game. Are the games in this scenario ones that I wouldn’t be able to play anyway due to the 4GB partition limit? It would defeat the purpose of what I’m trying to do if I can’t play every single PS2 game, especially the ones that require the hard drive expansion.
Thank you for the tutorial, it is way above average.

    • 1) 90001 is too for FMCB, but you can still mod it with swap magic. 50001 can work with fmcb.
      2) 3.6 is fine or 3.8. I used 3.6.
      3) 3.8.
      4) Did you see the fat PS2 tutorial video with the hard drive ? See my video below:

  13. Does with work knowing my HD dont have his own power supply?

  14. Hey, thanks for all that help…but I have a problem,
when I run the swap magic v3.6 CD I only get a screen telling “please put a PS2 disc or a format disc ” or something…
i burned the CD with ISOBurner and I don’t know what am I doing wrong

  15. Hi

I play with USB in PS2 already but someone make it works, but now i want to put in a new game, i downloaded id and it’s .iso file, like a DVD file, i want to convert to work with USB in PS2, i tried these programs but not getting a good result!

    Please, Thanks :)

  16. Mr.verstile I just wanted to ask that I am using Mcboot in my ps2,is there anyway that I can use usbadvance for playing games directly without using magic swap or ghost swap?

  17. versatile which do you prefer… using USB (External Hard Drive) compared to using Hard disk with PS2 adapter… whats your though about this???

    • Hard disk with PS2 adapter is the best by far.

      • Hello Versatile, very long time no see. How are you?

Straight to the question. Hard disk with PS2 adapter is only available on fat PS2, or slim PS2 could use that too?

I was giving up on playing PS2 without the DVD, because I can’t back it up via DVD, the lags I got with USB and networking methods (and I think it’s inconvenient cuz my laptop / PC has to be on when I play my PS2.

But somehow I feel the urge to try some other methods available. :)

  18. good afternoon my friends.i am freshman in the company and i have some questions:i have ps2 slim and a modchip matrix.iwant to play games from a usbflash sandisk 16gb for the begining and later i will try from a hard disk i am following the procedure you said but i can not play.it says matrix on the tv and it does not do anything please help me.also a lot of games which i downloaded from torrent (iso)it can not play anything,i have try 6 diferent dvds all types but nothing.thanks a lot for your time

  20. Back to u again gr8 Versatile, just a little question how to convert SLPM & SLES To SLUS, which the best tools. many thanks.

  21. collins on the block

pls!should i burn the .bin file only in usb asvance or both the .bin and .cue file

  22. hey……….i downloaded my pes 2012 with usb extreme…..i also have swap magic coder and usb advance…….but the main problem is that i’m unable to burn the .cue file, everytime i try to burn it, it would stop abruptly at 50%……i used every software that i had…….i used nero, img burn, magic iso,dvd decrypter…………..plzzzzz help……….

  23. hey hi can i play movies in the same manner i have a modchip can i copy and paste the move to usb and will it work

  24. hey there versatile
i have been following ur website instructions fro three days now
and i have also looked into youtube as u mentioned above .
    i have a new 9000X slim model
i just got the swap magic and i also got some games to try on
so my question was about hard drive
1)some one mentioned about Hard disk with PS2 adapter . what is that exactly . what does it do and whats its purpose .. believe me i have googled up and not have found a finite answer
    2) can u post the list of working games if you have it ready
    3) what to do think is enough HDD capacity for a normal use or how much can ps2 take it i mean how much bigger HDD it can handle

    thanks

    • 1) I do not know how to make hard drives work with new PS2 slim. I have the older 7XXXX models which is great for FMCB and OPL v.8.
      2) Don’t have a list. All games with swap magic work, period.
      3) It can take up to 2Tb.

  25. Hey Versatile.

First of all, I must say that this is an impressive guide, thank you very much for your hard work! However, I have a question:

Reading the comments to this guide, I read that you recommend a small partition in the external HDD for the FAT32.I just did a 300 GB one, like somebody before me mention.I also have a NTFS and a HFS+ for the rest of the disk. Will this multipartition HDD give me problems to load games?

    • No, right now I have a IDE external hard drive. I have a 30GB partition that is FAT32, and the rest of the hard drive is over 200+GB at NTFS. OPL V.8 recognizes my smaller partition fine.

  26. OK Ive done every thing right and my ps2 loads the game no problem but when the game screen comes up its looks like when your VCR has a loose cable or the tuning is off.. I can tell the game works but whats wrong with the display i can only describe it as if i put a fan in front of my TV and i can see each individual passing frame???

  27. got it to work thanks for any responses

  28. Hi! Pls i installed a ps2 game called italian job (cd) game to hard drive via usbextreme but only shows purple light on mcboot. And pls how do i rename an iso to slus… To be readable on opl 8.

  29. Thanks Versatile for the Instructions, works okay with mine :D

  30. Thats very impotant information. Thank you for it. But how can i install that software on my ps2 memory card? Secondly, how can i save some infomation like replays and leages of football games on this external drives becouse i saw its posible but i dont know actualy how.

    • You need to watch the ps2 playlist at youtube.com/gamedexterity and watch all of my PS2 videos. In regards to saving information to the external hard drive, you can do that with opl v.8 and using the virtual memory card feature.

  31. is this compatible on ps2 77001? the unit can play pirated dvds but there is no mcboot or any fmcb or homebrew.i like to install external hdd on my unit.

    • Do you have a tool to install FMCB?

      • Do you have a tool to install FMCB?whats that?theres no logo..like your demo..put dvd, power on and the logo or color balls then the game starts..can u teach me or i just follow this steps..i dont have any purchased (retail)gamebreaker, swapmagic etch..can i use downloaded swapmagic or codebreaker?

        • Sorry, you cannot just download swap magic or a codebreaker and expect it to work. It doesn’t work like that. FMCB is free mcboot. It is a homebrew application that allows you mod your memory card. The problem is, you need a tool like a modchip or swap magic or ar max to help install FMCB the first time. It sounds like you don’t have any of those tools.

          • ah ok..downloaded the codebreaker and try the cheats it work fine..the cheat work great on ffx-2,metal gear…can use the codebreaker dvd to work with this tutorial?

  32. greetings,

does swap magic really necessary even you have a mod chip?

  33. hey need some help i have loads of iso’s bt how to i get it on the hardrive just like how its done from the cd/dvd plz help

the type of it is SLES_535.64 after renaming the game it will become like this
      SLES_535.64.iso.

2- use alcohol120% to load more games with slus or sles on the virtual machine.

3- use usbextreme to copy your games on the harddrive choose dvd or cd يepending on the type of the game.

  48. Could you please re-upload the 2nd and 3rd video ?

  49. hey versatile is it true that if you change the game.iso into slus or sles or whatever will work on a fat 32 external hard drive. im having problems with usb insane its either the games over writing over another game when i rip iso drive or the program is crashing and also its saying “no ul.cfg found”. so at the moment im partitioning my 1.5tb to 500gb because i have a stack of ps2 iso games worth nearly around about that size

  50. how to speed up usb hdd? how to fix video time out on ps2 movies?
