Underground Update – March 1st, 2010

Revisions:

3-1-10: Initial Release.

Last week I did a contest that detailed a “Winter Cleaning” here on the blog. In order to keep it interesting, I decided to make it a game so that each day I did a change, and it is up to the users to figure out what changes I had done Monday through Friday. The winner who can accurately depict all the changes will win to have their name up on the blog on the banner.

“Change Week” Is Over – Submit Your Results!

Revisions:

2-27-10: Initial release.

2-28-10: Update: Two contestants have submitted their answers, and it is a close race! If you still want to participate, submit your answers now!

The “Change Week” is over. Were you smart enough to play the game?  Did you take a screen capture of everything on the website to see what changed from day to day?  No?  Well, you might be screwed then.

Who will win? Because of recent events, I changed the playing field slightly starting with Thursday. Friday’s change(s) will be much difficult to decipher because in order to win, you must accurately tell me all the changes that happened throughout the week. If you missed a small detail, that might put you off to the bottom of the list!

Good luck! Please fill out the form below to get the process started, and on Monday I will reveal the winner if there is one.

This Week Is “Change” Week!

Revisions:
2-21-10: Initial release.

Call it inspiration, or maybe call it being proactive.  What I am planning this week is to do something that I haven’t really had a chance to do in months and that is called doing some “Winter Cleaning”.

This week I am going to start doing some subtle and maybe not so subtle changes on the blog.  To bring make it even more interesting, I am going to make it a game.  Starting tomorrow (Monday, 2/22/10) through Friday (2/26/10), I am going to do some significant changes on the blog.  One change a day until by Saturday morning there are 5 changes on the blog.

The game is can you detect all 5 changes and repeat what those changes are in order from Monday through Friday?  The first person to get it right will receive a whole week’s recognition as the Underground’s “Best Treasure Hunter” displayed prominently on the front page of the blog or even in the tagline of the blog banner.

Now the changes will be obvious, and I will be leaving bread crumbs behind for you guys to follow me.  If I rewrite a tutorial, respond to a comment, or update some obscure article, this does not count as a change. These changes are part of living documents.

When I mean significant changes, it will be something such as rewriting a “blog page”, changing the blog banner, changing the theme, or something else.  If I wrote down all the examples, then that would be pretty easy to know what changes to look for, wouldn’t it?

I am going to throw a curve ball though.  The first four days I will leave hints behind, but on the last day no hints whatsoever. Good luck hunting!

POLL ENDS MIDNIGHT (GMT -6) ON 2/9/2010

FINAL VIDEO TO BE RELEASED THE FOLLOWING WEEK

Comments on last month’s contest:

Last months contest was so piss poor that I decided to bring it back up in action again. Let’s have more than 2 submissions, please?

Objective:

For a certain time period, users are to submit their best wallpaper. Once all wallpaper submissions are received, a poll is created and the community votes for the best one.

The wallpaper with the most votes gets to be featured in the next Youtube video.

Prize:

If you are the winner, you get personal satisfaction that your wallpaper is featured in not only a video, but also in a follow-up article.  If you have a website, Versatile will promote that too as part of the winning spree.

Contest Rules:

1) Users are to leave a comment to this blog article with a link to a wallpaper. Wallpaper preferred resolution is 1280×720. Please get me a link to the closest resoultion as possible.

2) Images are not to be pornographic. Please use discretion. Your video will be observed by kids, teenagers, parents, adults, young, old, male and female.

3) Only one image submitted per unique commenter user name.   Therefore, pick your BEST and FAVORITE wallpaper choice.  If you can’t make up your mind, list all your wallpapers and I will PICK one wallpaper that I like and put it into the poll.

3)  The contest will run for 5 days. This contents ends at midnight on the date specified at the top of this article.

4)  After contest is over, I will run a poll for all submitted images. Poll will run the following week, to end at my discretion at midnight ofthe day of my choosing (GMT -6).  See top of article for deadlines.

Why do this contest?

  1. It’s fun.
  2. Brings community involvement. Anybody can participate.
  3. The winner will have the joy of seeing THEIR submitted wallpaper featured in a video. Is that not cool?
  4. I love bringing joy to people. The video helps the general youtube audience, and the wallpaper is just an indirect way of me saying Thank You for all the readers of this blog.

Extra Notes:

Oh so often we get so stuck in a daily rut in our lives, and hardly have the time to live a little. Want to break the mold? Then play the contest game! If the participation is even poorer for February, March I will make a dedicated Youtube video and see if this will be a game changer or not.

Do you like this idea? Think the rules needs to be changed a little? Let me know! Time is wasting! Let’s see those wallpapers!

FINAL VIDEO TO BE RELEASED THE FOLLOWING WEEK

I just thought of this idea today as I was eating dinner and chatting with my youtube partner over MSN (funny how the best ideas come out of IM chatting). Anyway, we were talking about videos and ideas and I just came up with an idea so great I just had to write about it.

So if you haven’t known, I have a new youtube account, and I am working with a fellow youtube friend who has similar interests as I do. We teamed up, and the new account is gamedexterity. You can see the work I have done on my part here.

In every single video that I do, I always change the wallpaper. Why? I figured a new video needs a new wallpaper to keep things interesting and spice things up. Now sometimes the wallpapers are related to the subject of the video, and sometimes the wallpaper has nothing to do with the video subject material at all.

Most of the time I like to do wallpapers in these categories: gaming, movies, abstract art, vector art, and misc “provocative” wallpapers. I can’t really explain what provocative is, because it will destroy the mystery of my taste. Let’s just say it makes you go “OMG, I can’t believe he has that kind of wallpaper!” :)

So with 2010 here, it is natural (just like every year) to start new ideas and trends. I bring to you the new Underground Wallpaper Youtube Experiment.

What is this experiment?

This is how it works, because I love community involvement. The last contest with the Underground banner was a blast, and if this experiment is successful, I will run this contest once a month!

This contents ends at midnight on Saturday, January 9th (GMT -6).

4)  After contest is over, I will run a poll for all submitted images. Poll will run the following week, to end at midnight on Friday of that week (GMT -6).

The winning wallpaper will go into my next video.  The wallpaper may be related to the subject theme of the next video, or it may not even relate. This is OK. I am just interested as to how this will turn out.

Example:

This wallpaper won the contest:

The video I just happened to be talking about is how to maintain and extend the life of your hard drive. Turtles and hard drives have NOTHING in common, but that is OK.

Do you like this idea? Think the rules needs to be changed a little? Let me know! Time is wasting! Let’s see those wallpapers!

Can You Identify the Avatar? – Issue 2

Welcome readers. I’m going to try a new short lived form of interactivity on this blog. Did you notice that as an author, I always have a knack for subtle, or interesting WordPress avatars? Well, I do. Thus, I came up with a fun game called “Can You Identify the Avatar?”

The purpose of the game is each week to have the viewers (that’s you) to identify WTF is Versatile1’s avatar. Sometimes it is easy, and sometimes its hard to tell because the avatar is so small. Players participate by posting in the comments a description of what they think Versatile1’s avatar picture is.

Contest is open for 7 days from date of posting, and then all submissions are closed (however, the contest could end much earlier than that depending on entries). From there, the person with the best description wins, and you get recognition through the front page of the blog on the right hand side.

The twist: Most of the time the avatar may have a theme associated with it, sometimes not. When you make your comment, you have two choices:

  • 1) Either write a description of the avatar and hope for the best or
  • 2) Write what the theme of the avatar is and how it correlates. Themes are usually something that is happening on the website, and the nature of the avatar hooks into this theme for that particular time frame.

The problem is if you choose the wrong path, that you won’t win. Example: I wrote a post on the ethics of clowns visiting schools as a possible career path. Later that week I hold the contest, and Tony writes the theme comment: “There is clearly a theme for V1’s avatar. Seeing that it is a picture of Bozo the clown, and with the recent attention of clowns in the news, then the theme must be clowns.”

I come back saying it is correct, and Tony wins. However, Mike writes a description like this: “Obviously, V1 picture is a clown – Bozo the clown.”.

Both entries are correct, but the poster with the correct theme takes precedence over the description comment. Makes sense? Let’s play!

**********************************************
Last time around, TvDenimChap was the closest winner.  The avatar was a big plush spider going at it with the a hot lady on the couch.  This really was a theme, and the theme was STD.  I did a google search, and this spider image came up. :0
Aight, with that said, I have come up with a new avatar.  Let your imagination fly.  If enough people try, a new avatar will come up next week.  Good luck!
