Grand Theft Auto 4 Breaks Records

Here is a quick recap of Halo 3’s sales:

  • First-day sales of Halo 3 reached $180 million in the U.S
  • Worldwide more than US$300 million worth were sold in the first week

This is the performance of GTA IV:

  • Take-Two estimates that on its first day, GTA IV sold 3.6 million copies and generated $310 million in sales

Would you like to hear more?

  • GTA IV sold more than 6 million copies in the first week

There is, however, a couple of side notes:

Halo 3 was only release on 1 console (360), while GTA IV was released on both PS3 and 360. So, give Halo 3 a little more credit.

EA games is likely to buy out Take-Two. In the event that it does happen, any future GTA games could turn out to be very different than their predecessors.

  1. To compare GTA’s release to Halo 3’s release is not comparing apples to apples. Halo 3 is exclusive to Xbox, while GTA is on both. I’m sure that a good percentage of those who bought GTA also bought Halo 3, but guess what, there are a several PS3 Only owners who also bought GTA.

Both are great accomplishments, but it should be recognized that GTA had a much larger customer base. I’d like to see GTA’s Xbox version go head to head with Halo 3 and see how that went.

  2. sorry.. i didn’t read the rest of your post. nevermind what i said.
