Foreword:  I am very excited.  This is definitely one of my favorite posts for 2009, and as you read further, you will understand why.  This guide is clearly not illegal.  It is simply another method to enable users to play their LAN enabled games over the Internet with friends.  No longer are you bound to be in the basement with your PCs to play LAN games! There is a reason why I spent two long nights working on this guide and the excellent video!  ~ Versatile

If you follow this blog, or know anything about VPN programs, Hamachi is a great program that people can use to play LAN games with each other.  In short, Hamachi was the king for implementing LAN games to play over the Internet.  How it worked is people would join these networks, and Hamachi gives each user a unique IP address.  When you launch a game, the game is tricked into thinking that everyone in the network is on the same LAN, and hence, you can see each other to play the game.

Of course, Hamachi has other useful purposes such as being a great secure chat medium, as well as being an alternative as a safe VPN to tunnel into your PCs and transfer files or encrypt remote transfers or remote administration.

See you are praising Hamachi?

Just like any program in life, everything has its downfall unfortunately. Hamachi is a great program, but when you try to play LAN enabled games over the Internet, it is not an exact science.  I harp a lot about the importance of VPN alias, and I thought that was the holy grail to make games work, but that is not true unfortunately.

Although you do the VPN alias for the user, it turns out that sometimes it doesn’t make the server show up in the game.  You may have to disable encryption, and instead of having the the first 3 octets of the IP address same as host and the last octet the same as the client’s last octet, you may have to change the method where the last octet of the VPN alias is one number higher than the client’s last octet.

For example:

Host IP: 5.156.23.333

Client IP: 5.142.69.449

The traditional VPN alias for host would be:  5.156.23.449.  Sometimes not all games will work properly, and through error and trial, you find out the VPN alias should really be 5.156.23.334.  Get my drift?  It is not an exact science.

Plus, there are claims that in Vista and Windows 7 that the UDP traffic that Hamahi used is not being routed properly in the OS so that is why you may not see a game in the LAN menu.

Well frick man.  How about Garena?

I’m glad you reminded me about Garena.  Don’t get me wrong, Garena is a great program to. Hamachi is limited in the sense that in order to play your favorite game, you need other people online at the same time in your network.  Since the network is limited to 16 players, you constantly have to kick people to get new people inside.

When using Garena, this is not the case anymore.  Garena is almost like Valve’s Steam in the sense that it has a game browser.  It has multiple network rooms, where the max limit of each room is 225 players.  Garena takes care of the VPN alias in the background.  All you need to do is make sure your game is the latest version as the other players, host a game, and then people can instantly join you through the multiplayer aspect of the game in question.

The problem? Garena has a small list of games. The hottest games they got going on right now is Left 4 Dead, Killing Floor, Starcraft, and the Warcraft 3 series.  It is funny that they have COD4 and COD5.  Although its nearly empty for USA rooms, its vastly popular in Brazil and Europe networks?  What gives? >_>

If you have a LAN game like Diablo II, there is no way you can make that work in Garena.  You can try to make it work in Hamachi though, but you will have to mess with the VPN alias, and making Hamachi the primary adapter in Windows, which I have guides on already.

This is why I am so glad to find a new program called Tunngle.

All right, you got me.  What is Tunngle?

Tunngle (pronounced as “tung-gle” – I hope that is right pronunciation) is another VPN client program like Hamachi or Garena.  However, it is vastly compared to Hamachi because of its feature set.

Take a look at the chart below, thanks to the source, and major props to Brioche.

As you can see, Tunngle blows Hamachi out of the water.  It has an interface that is a cross between Steam and Garena.  It has a list of game networks that you can join and its very easy to play a game.  Zero configuration which I will talk about later in this guide.  It truly is the holy grail that all the hardcore PC gamers have been waiting for.  Oh yea, and if a game is not on the Tunngle network, you can go to a misc network and play your game there!  It has sexy written all over it.

You are killing me with anticipation.  How do I get started with Tunngle?!

Haha, keep your pants on. Here is the guide you have been waiting for in easy to follow steps:

Note: The program is made by German programmers, and it is still in beta.  They are working on an English translation, which I hope is released soon!

1) Go to www.tunngle.net.  Download the program and install it.  Make an account at the website and fill out the required information.  Make sure to confirm the email message.

2) Launch the tunngle.net program.  It will look like the screenshot when you first load it.

3)  After awhile a message will pop up below.  Say “Ja”.

4) Type in your account and software password.

It will take about a minute to connect and it looks like the screen below.

5)  Here you are at the main screen.  Click on community, then network, then go to browser.

6)  On the left hand side, is all the categories. If you select any particular category, you can break it down to the specific games.

7)  Enter into any game room.  Now minimize Tunngle, and launch your game.  When you go to the LAN portion, you should see servers if anyone is hosting.  Likewise, you can host and others will see it.  No configuration.  No need to mess with VPN alias or other settings.

Pretty cool right?  Let’s say that your favorite game is not in the Tunngle game browser.  No worries!  Just go to any game room, although you can go to one of the rooms under “misc”.  Host your game there with your friend, and Tunngle takes care of the rest.

OMG, this really is the holy grail!

Of course it is. If you do not realize the beauty of this program, then I ask you leave or reconsider why this program is a breakthrough. Easy to use, easy to setup, and best of all, it works with all games with LAN functionality.  Screw you Garena.  Hamachi can rot in hell when your favorite game is not working, but yet it works great in Tunngle!

The only problem is right now like 98% of the user base in Tunngle are Europe/Asia game players.  There are hardly any USA players, maybe 0.05% are USA/Canada players.  My goal is that this article, coupled with my Youtube video, will open up other peoples eyes to get onto the Tunngle network.

I will definitely be visiting the Tunngle network to share my story as well as this article and see if I can help with promotion of such a fine program. Thank you Tunngle.  You are a blessing.

Underground Gamer Requests

Note (added 7-3-10): There are a lot of LAN games I have tested, and due to the ridiculous amount of those games, I cannot and will not put those games into the list below. Therefore, if the game has LAN, it is guaranteed to work. No ifs, ands, or buts. It will work!

Tunngle is still in its infancy stage.  With that said, as more and more people read about this article, I want you to let us know what games you have that you want to play on Tunngle.  As more and more people comment, we will have a special list for everyone to contribute to!

Games we want you to have to play with us.  Games with an * means modification may be needed.  Just go to the tunngle server, host a LAN game, and people can join without special instructions!  All games below are verified to work unless noted below:

  • Battlefield Vietnam
  • Borderlands
  • Call of Duty*[best if you use the windows 1.5 private server crack to defeat “awaiting cd key authorization” method]

  1. while installing it said “could’nt find any drivers” in that dos screen.now when i go to network—-browser i can’t see any game list on the left side

  2. I’ve been using Tunngle for the past couple days to play Dirt 1 with a friend. Codemasters shut down their online servers back in September, so there was no way to play online, period. We tried Hamachi, but couldn’t figure it out enough to get it to work. Tunngle was easy and awesome. Now we don’t need Codemasters to keep their servers up, we can play on LAN. Unbelievably cool.

I do have one question though: do you know how to set up a new network in the Misc section of the Tuggnel Browser? There were a few other people in the Dirt room, and we just wanted our 2 player game, so we tried one of the misc networks, but they were password protected (I think, don’t know German). In the end we just used another empty network in the Sports section, but if it’s possible to create a new network, that would be cool.

    Loved the article. Thanks!!!

  3. Hey the only way to play Resident Evil 5 is with the teknogods script thing? cuz im not seeing games.

  4. Tunngle is awesome, and now it’s even awesomer for us english speakers! Update your Tunngle, folks! Its a simple download, install, and reboot. All of your settings are still there so no need to reconfigure anything (assuming you had an odd setup).

  5. Just curious, I just bought killing floor and would like to play it with my two friends here to my right.

Only thing is we don’t have the money to purchase two more copies.. so is there a way to plan via LAN without having to buy two more copies?

    Please let me know asap!

    Thank you,
    ~J

  6. i did everything it works by the way.
but when i play cod 5 i get server authentication failure!!!

  7. hi, i’m having trouble with tunngle. 😦 it gets stuck at the finalizing window for a few minutes then it snaps back to the log in menu! please help!

    • Port forward udp 11155?

      • thanks for your prompt reply. 🙂 i got it to work.
also, is tunngle safe to use on windows xp? my friend is having trouble with installation. halfway through installation a window pops up and says that if he continues installation, it might damage his computer etc etc etc.

also, is it really necessary to disconnect from the internet when setting up a LAN game in NFS MW?

  8. its annoying when i try to play rainbow six vegas 2 with this software i dont find any LAN games

    • This is not a fair statement. Are you trying to find LAN games when there are physically people hosting, or you trying to find a LAN game when no one is online, or no one is hosting?

  9. Tutorial updated with troubleshooting video.

  10. hey man,
Thanks for the tutorial. I will install Tungle later. I have used Hamachi quite years ago. But recently nobody seems to play on Hamachi anymore.
Hope I can add you as buddy to MW2 for spec ops. I havent even played spec ops yet even tho I got the game last year when it came out.
    Cheer

  11. Um, ok i think i have everything mixed up, so um i wanted to play online games for free like left 4 dead 2 but when i did everything u did. i thought i didnt have to download anything else but um was i suppose to download left 4 dead 2 the game? or i dont have too? because u said launch it but when i had tunngle i thought it would just give me the game instead..but how did u get ur left 4 dead 2? to play on tunngle?

    • bob'sYOURuncle

Um, ok the article specifically said to minimise Tunngle & launch your game. So, um, what part of that was so difficult to understand?

You do realise that “um” is used in SPOKEN conversation only…

    • NuclearDuckie

You kind of need to … you know, HAVE the game first. Downloading this program will not instantly give you access to the games you want to play.

      • To add onto this, there are legitimate players like myself that come to Tunngle to play with others because sometimes it is faster to play here than using the real servers, which might be hard to believe.

  12. Let’s think about this. You need Tunngle, and you need the game in question. Left 4 dead 2 you can get many ways. Buy it. Steal it. Borrow it from a friend. Download it from the Internet. It all depends on what you want to do.

  13. The Tunngle adapter works with Win XP right or not ??? Becouse When I install The VPN it Writes that there is a danger for my computer if it doesn’t designed for Win XP Versatile Help ME PLEASE Is it designet for Win XP

  14. Pandachinoman

Excellent article, I mean this a great program and no many people know about it, it’s a shame…but with this article you will help a lot… Thanks for sharing this awesome program!

  15. Hey!I’m sorry to say but, when I want to sign in on Tunngle (Installed on computer), it gives the message that “(4-109): could not initialize the Tunngle network adapter”
Your article is awesome to help anyone BUT,
    How can I use this?

  16. nice guide!! … never heard of tungle before O.O

  17. And what about ping and quality of p2p connections via Tunngle?

    • Ping and quality of P2P is no different than using hamachi. Once the game has started, it is PURE and DIRECT P2P between the HOST and all CLIENTS.

If you are in africa and you play with someone from Austrailia, the ping will be high. I don’t care if it is tunngle, hamachi, or garena. You will always have high ping.

  18. absolutely the next best thing after hamachi and garena, thanks for the info ^_^

  19. If someone plays with Tunngle he has to be connected on the net?

  20. When I connect to Tunngle , this connection appears as a real connection for example when I close this program , it says ” a connection disconnected(or something) ” , is it normal ? I hope you understand what I want too say :S

  21. Hi Versatile!

I got a problem. I installed Tunngle, everything is fine but… everytime I start Vegas2 and try either host or join to a match it’s always said to me:

“YOUR ETHERNET CABLE IS NOT CONNECTED”

What can I do about it? And an other question: how and where can I make a server? In the game or outside in the Tunngle?

PS: I got soem short deep noises on my computer from time to time (like whoam!) since I started Tunngle. Is it normal? What can i do about it?

    • 1) Please watch the tunngle troubleshooting video.
      2) Use google on your ethernet cable error
      3) Make a server or join a server is as simple as launching the game while sitting in the vegas 2 room and creating or joining a game. See my tunngle game collection #2, I showcase Vegas 2.
      4) Making noises is not normal. Do a disk check of hard drive, make sure its not going to die on you.

      • Hehe, I have to laugh a little at #4. I changed the default sounds, but I too have heard those noises. Nothing to worry about. I believe the noises you are hearing are people entering and leaving the Tunngle Lobby or other room.

  22. Haha… inbetween I discovered it, too!

  23. THANKS AM A JAMAICAN AND SINGLE CAN BE VERY BORING THANKS

  24. ….I got a trojan man, wtf?
I’m pretty sure it was wrong, but still….

  25. Lo instale y no me sirve ya que la primera vez si sirve pero luego apago la Pc Y ya no me sirve me sale error 4-114 tengo windowsXP SP3 gracias por su ayuda.

  26. Install it and does not help me since the first time if it works but then turn off the PC and no longer serves me I get error I have WindowsXP SP3 4-114 thanks for your help.

  27. Hey when i tried to connect to any lan server then it saysa ” connecting……” after that it says ” your connection to lan server has been lost” 😦 help

  28. Versatile Why does every lan game i play have huge lag ?

  29. yes and 1312937128 after installing gg.

  30. I wanna play Halo online

  31. come play ut3 unreal tournament 3 the best game ever on tunngle

  32. can we play fifa 11 using tunggle?

      • Yes, you can play fifa 11 through tunngle (i did through hamachi).

Your article is biased and although tunngle is a good piece of software the article is a lie in most parts when it tries to compare it to other tools.

Some games do not allow you to play through lan even when they have the LAN option… an example: warhammer 40,000 as it requires a LIVE bypass which hasn’t been released.

I’ve played games that DO NOT work on tunngle but do work on hamachi 1.1.0.5 or garena.

Newer versions of hamachi do not work with every game but the older one does for sure.

Wish you good luck with your life. But please stop making such strict declarations as they are dangerously misleading.

        I

        • Thank you for your comment. As new games arise that work, then I’ll take that into consideration. Now tell me about your fifa 11 experience…was it lag free? Why were there so many people on the teknogods forums ranting for team teknogods to evaluate fifa 11?

I’d like to hear more about your games that were tunngle incompatible, but old school hamachi compatible. Share the knowledge.

  33. need some help….

how to play r.u.s.e. in lan?

  34. Tunngle is good, but its disconnecting me and my friend in the middle of the game.
We play Heroes of M&M TotE patch 3.1
Every game we start we play some time and than DISCONNECT!
    can some1 help
    thanks

  35. Yep, Tunngle rocks.
My mate and I were trying in vain to do a direct TCP connection to play two-player Dungeon Keeper 2.
He could see the map I was hosting, but it wouldn’t connect, ven though I had port forwarding setup correctly for the game, and so did my mate (after I told him to check). So I told him to install Tunngle, and we’ll try that. Hey presto, straight in, in seconds. Totally brilliant.

    • *Cries* Those are the best moments in life. I could tell you stories of frustration where games refused to work outside of Tunngle, then went to tunngle and worked 1st try.

I have been using Tunngle since July 2009, and I have not looked back. Because of my efforts, it is the only reason we have over 200+ tunngle videos today on youtube, when in 2009 there were only 6. Talk about impact.

  36. i installed tunngle today…the problem showing up when i need to choose tunngle adapter.it said tthe tunngle adapter was found and if i like to associate it or not..obviously i clicked yes and bam!! the same question showing up again n again n again…dnt knw what to do..pls help!!

  37. well…i found a solution but dat not an actual solution..i clicked on tunngle adapter properties and untick QOS PACKET SCHEDULER and start tryng to logged in..obviously its nt possible dn again i go to tunngle adapter properties and tick into QOS PACKET SCHEDULER and able to logged in…bt due to this i m facing massive blue screen memory dump..etc etc…so its not a solution…can u gv me a proper solution?

  38. Tunngle is not in the same league as Game Ranger, GR 10 tunngle 1 < it`s rubiish

  39. there is no server in lan howw to get a server i tried a lot of times but i think its not working can some one help me.
need for speed most wanted that is the game in which i m facing the problem plz some one solve my problem

  40. Hi, I tried to play Starcraft with one of my friends, but he couldn’t see my hosted game, and I couldn’t see his hosted game. Do you know what the problem could be?

  41. Hi Verastile,
I installed tunngle but it didn’t start i did everything you shown in your video. Actually my internet connection is shared type. Its provided by my college authorities. They distributed it through routers. And they are using Cyberoam for decurity purpose. I tried to get access to the router using ip address but i stuck at the login menu, I can’t go through it.
While connecting tunngle, it shows the error 2-101(could not reach tunngle server)
After that it shows 4-104(could not reach tunngle master server)
Help me please I am trying to get through it from many days. 😦

  42. sometimes i cant find my friends host though i and my friend used the same game updates, and he cant find my host either…but everyone can see his host and mine too …! what is the problem and can we join our host through tunngle ip or through something else?
