Say No To Instant Messengers? – Taking a Vacation

I’ve decided that starting today (right now at time of this posting), through midnight of Sunday (12th), I will be staying away from all forms of Instant Messengers.

This means you will not find me on MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk, Xfire (hardly use it anyway), or even Skype.

If you really need to get a hold of me, e-mail me. As usual, I will be checking the blog and youtube account daily.

So why did I decide to take effectively a week away from all IM programs?  Well, it’s simple really. Instant messengers are a great way for a forms of communications, but also at the same time, it can be a huge time sink.

Yesterday I was helping out a group of buddies with this particular PC game where it didn’t work correctly online. After 1.5 hours of troubleshooting and going over network ports and the like, it turned out that this particular game worked great in Hamachi, and not in the other VPN gaming programs.

I don’t know why, and right now I don’t really care.  All I knew that instead of spending my Sunday afternoon in peace sorting out socks, I was pulled into a side activity to help these gamers out.

Technically, I could have said no, but I really thought I knew what the answer was so I decided to help out. Now in retrospect , I realize a lot of my time is spent with other people, and not enough for myself or special interest projects.

Therefore, I am going to take a week off from all Instant Messengers. It is going to be great, and if all hell breaks loose, then so be it. Use google as your friend. Consult your own friends, or hell, consult the VST team.  They are there to help you out.
