PS3 Homebrew App – Movian – Great Way To Play Any Movie File Format

Revisions:

7-6-15: Initial release.

If you are a PS3 user and you are one of the lucky few with a CFW or modded (jailbroken) PS3 console, you will find out that it cannot play every single movie file format from a usb device. For example, it cannot play .mkv natively, or it doesn’t support .srt subtitle files that are in the same directory as your movie.

The old school method involved converting your videos to .mp4, and hard code your subtitles into the movie (if you want subtitles) so it can play on the PS3 properly. Well, I found a new app called Movian (formerly known as Showtime) that turns your PS3 into the ultimate home theater machine. Think XBMC, but changed for PS3.

There are so many features I could rant about, but there are my favorites:

  • Plays  variety of movie and audio formats
  • Stream online television, audio, and movies using plugins
  • Can automatically download subtitles for your movies
  • Easy to use interface

Installation is a piece of cake. Basically you download the latest .pkg file, put it on your usb fat32 device, plug it into the PS3 front usb port, run the pkg file installer, and then run Movian under the TV Services section on the main XMB screen.

It is a great program that does a lot. I highly recommend it. Don’t take my word for it, see my video tutorial below as well. Enjoy!

How To Install CFW for the PS3 from OFW 3.55

Revisions:

1-23-15: Initial release.

In today’s video tutorial, I will show you how to easily update your fat PS3 that is currently on 3.55 official firmware to a custom firmware, such darknet cobra 4.66 CEX version.

To find PS3 CFW files, you can look that up on the psx-scene.com or at tortuga-cove.com.

It is a pretty painless process, and just make sure you are downloading official CFW files, and not shady ones!

How To Fix E3 Flasher NOR Clip Issues (10001100 Fix)

Revisions:

1-20-15: Initial release.

Hey guys,

During my PS3 modding journey, I had to attach the E3 flasher clip to my NOR clip. The first time I installed the clip, I heard a “click” so I assumed all was good, right?

Well, it turns out that after I connected my TF cover board and when I try to read a dump from the NOR chip, I got the LEDs flashing the error code “10001100” which means the NOR clip doesn’t have a good seat to the chip itself.

So I took apart the PS3, put more pressure onto the clip, reassemble the PS3, and I still got the issues? What the hell! After 6+ hours  of troubleshooting, and taking many breaks, I figured out how to fix it!

See the video tutorial below and hopefully you don’t get into the same issue as I did. 🙂

How To Downgrade the Fat PS3 from 4.66 to 3.55 Firmware Using E3 Flasher Tutorial

Revisions:

1-13-15: Added part 2 of video tutorial.

1-16-15: Part 3 video tutorial added.

Before Xmas holidays, I got a chance to record a lot of video footage as I took apart my PS3 and attempted to install the E3 flasher for my fat PS3 that uses the NOR chip.

Today I am proud to release the first portion of that video tutorial, where I will show you how to take apart the fat PS3, and go into detail on how to secure the E3 clip to the PS3 mobo (the hardest part of the mod).

One reason I like how I did this video is I go over in detail the steps to take apart the PS3 in such a way that it doesn’t take too much of the viewer’s time. Other PS3 videos on other youtube channels the guys either fast forward through the disassemble process without any narration, or if they do decide to talk, its a LONG video!!!

If you guys been watching me over the years, you know I hate watching LONG videos, so its always my mantra to try to record short but concise videos when I can. Anyway, see the video below and please give a thumbs up, it really helps.

If you have specific PS3 questions, I prefer you ask it on the youtube channel so other gamers can benefit from your questions.

How To Determine the Lowest Compatible PS3 Firmware for Downgrading

PS3 Console

Revisions:
1-10-15: Initial release.

In my latest PS3 video, I will show you how to determine what is the lowest firmware that your PS3 can accept. Why is this important?

If you want to do CFW (custom firmware) and you upgraded your PS3 to the latest official firmware (i.e. 4.66) you may or may not be able to downgrade it if the original firmware loaded on the system is 3.56 or higher.

If it turns out that your PS3 model was originally with built firmware 3.55 or lower, then that means your PS3 can be downgraded through the use of a hardware flasher of some sort.

See the video tutorial for more details, and check out the youtube page for the download link to MinVerCheck.rar file.

Quick Overview of E3 NOR Flasher for Downgrading Fat or Slim PS3 Consoles

Revisions:
1-6-15: Initial release.

Hey guys, I’ll keep it short. Last November/December I got my hands on an E3 NOR Flasher to be used with my fat PS3, model number CECHL. I’ve been eyeing this mod for a long time because I really wanted to downgrade my PS3 from 4.66 OFW to a CFW so I can run homebrew programs.

After watching 20+ youtube videos and learning how each tutorial maker did their own thing, I decided it was my turn to give the mod a try. It wasn’t easy at first, and I went slow and steady making sure I knew how everything worked. After a full week of off and on troubleshooting, experimenting, and testing, I got my PS3 finally downgraded and now I am more knowledgeable than I was before on this whole modding scene. If you follow me on my youtube channel (youtube.com/user/moneyinphx), you will see the new videos in the weeks to come.

To celebrate, see my E3 NOR Flasher unbox video below. Enjoy!
