Halo Wars

Alright, this is apparently the next new game from Ensemble Studios.

It looks amazing, let me tell you.

Here is a video:

Halo Wars is a real-time action strategy game for the Xbox 360 that allows the player to control large armies and to shrewdly direct them in realistic warfare. Set early in the iconic war between the Covenant and UNSC – made famous by the Halo FPS games – Halo Wars provides a new angle on the war while bringing new heroes to the battle.

The images below are renders of the units or buildings in-game. Mouse-over each image to see the original concept art. In the weeks and months ahead we will be updating the features page with more information and imagery.

Interview: Musicmasteria on the PS2 Mod

[Commentary by Versatile1] Hey guys, this is an exclusive interview with MusicMasteria. On youtube, he has several video’s depicting how to make your own slide card for your PS2. He knows his stuff, and today we present the first ever interview with the brainchild…

The Underground: How did you get involved into PS2 mods?

Musicmasteria: Well, I wanted to back up my games and without any form of modding at the time, I couldn’t do that. So I left it alone and continued my life. Then, while looking around on afterdawn.com I found a simple template for a slide card. Then I decided, I could make a better template than that so… I did. I first created my own slide card and tested it (without swap magic at the time) and it worked so I made a template and put it on my website. I then decided to spread my template to You Tube and created a tutorial and that is what you see today.

The Underground: How did you decide to go the slide card route? Have you tried any other methods such as HDALoader, or memory card exploit? Do you have an original slide card? Or did you make one up from a template?

Musicmasteria: I decided to start with a slide card because I had the means to make one for free. I don’t have a HD for my PS2 so I haven’t tried HDALoader but, from what I have read, it is a very good mod. Quick load times were a large factor for that. I have however tried USBAdvance. I didn’t really get it to work for me that well but I have seen it work on You Tube videos. I do not own an original slide card. Why would anyone spend $5 on something you could make for little or no cost with my tutorial? My first slide card was my own interpretation of a simple template I found on afterdawn.com a long time ago.

The Underground: How big is your PS2 game library?

Musicmasteria: Well if I were that kind of person, I could have an infinitely long list of PS2 games but if you would like to see my game collection, go to http://gamelist.musicmasteria.2ya.com

The Underground: What is the most common question you get on your You Tube video?

Musicmasteria: *Laughs* I get a lot of the same questions on my You Tube video. A common one is: “What does a slide card do?” or something along those lines. I don’t know why people ask this when there are so many other videos on You Tube saying how to use swap magic and slide cards. Another question is: “Where can I download games?”. I can’t really tell you that but if you really want to know, Google can tell you.

I have 96 comments on my video so far and that’s not including my responses to questions and comments *laughs*.

The Underground: Do you plan on moving onto other consoles and modding them too?

Musicmasteria: I don’t know. PS2 is the easiest console to play back up games on because of Swap Magic. No other console has a swap magic-like thing for playing backed up games. Also, the other newer consoles have a lot of protection against modding. Besides, I rather keep the warranties that I still have and wait for them to be long expired before I try modding them.. Now if someone was willing to give up their console or money for me to get one, then I would use that console solely for modding.

The Underground: What was the first PS2 game you remember backing up?

Musicmasteria: The first game I ever tried to back up was Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 (THPS 3). I didn’t even have a slide card or swap magic then and that of course didn’t work. Then, once I made a slide card, I used it to play my backup of THPS 3 with the original game (using the original game in place of swap magic). That worked but was very limited because you could only use the back up if you could play the original game up to one of the menu’s. Now that I have swap magic, I can play the back up in the case of my original breaking.

I do still have a video on Google Videos for how to use swap magic and a slide card to play copied games if anyone is interested. It is on private view so you can only see it from the link (no search). It can be found here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2874997274037472959. I even have the old video of me using THPS 3 to play the back up of it. It is on public view and can be found here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4416144802633809982

I personally like the newer video better (first link).  Thanks again for the interview. Means a lot 🙂

What Is P2P?

p2p?

What exactly does P2P mean? Well, it’s only the best thing ever invented. P2P stands for Peer to Peer. This is the fastest and most widely used way to transfer files over the internet or a home network. Recently, P2P has been used to download media such as movies, programs, music, pictures, or even books. It has been recorded that about 85% of all internet bandwidth is being used for ‘illegal’ downloading from a P2P network. But how exactly does P2P work?

P2P, is usually thought to run off of a centralized server containing all of the media being downloaded, but oh contraire. P2P uses only client based nodes, simply put, you are in another persons computer. The P2P software you are using simply allows you to ‘share’ the media you would like others to be able to download. For example, in LimeWire, you can share a folder by choosing Tools>Options>Sharing.

(Click for a larger view)

From here, you can share any folder on your hard drive. These files then become visible to anyone searching for a file currently on your computer. They are then able to download this file directly from your computer over the internet.

With torrent clients, all you have to do to share a file, is to let the download finish, but DON’T delete the torrent, let it sit and allow others to upload, or take that file off of your computer(otherwise known as ‘seeding’)

(Click for a larger view)

As for security, the only real threat is the well know viruses that bored computer geeks make in their spare time 🙂 . When downloading a file from ANY P2P network, I would recommend reading all comments about the selected file, or looking at the size. If you see the size of a selected movie to be 123.4KB, think again. How could a 2 hour long movie be that small? This is a trick which most noobs fall for. I have had numerous friends have their computers completely screw from doing this.

And as for the legality of this, you decide. I will tell you my opinion in a further post!

If you have any further questions, please comment and I WILL comment back!

Thanks,

Demonator

VERN: Virtual Environment Resource Navigator

 VERN!

Ignore the title. It will bore you, scare you, even make this article seem terrible.

Of course, we like to tell you what you are reading about.

So, feeling crowded? Looking for that extra space? Have just too many darn windows open and need to use all of them?

Use VERN!

“Vern allows you to have many programs running at once with each occupying its own Virtual Screen. Vern displays a representation of each of the Virtual Screens in its selector, which, in total, we refer to as VernSpace. A mini window on the surface of the Vern selector is a representation of the actual program in VernSpace.”

Basically, VERN “results in a cleaner looking desktop and can actually speed up the look and feel of Windows.” Anything in the VERNSpace not used is not active and does not require as much physical memory. The programs not used but running are not redrawn. what does that mean? well, your computer spends a short time on doing everything. for example, 10 millisecond (ms) on program A, 10 ms on B, 10 ms on C, etc. till you go back to program A. then the loop repeats with minor modifications. as such, something not used in the VERNSpace is not redrawn and is partially skipped in the loop. Vern’s use of memory is minimal, for real.

I use this thing all the time, and its really amazing. much like Launchy from our earlier posts, VERN holds a space in our hearts as one of the top programs to use on your pc.

MemTest

Have you experienced problems with your pc? don’t know why or what is going on?

Well, it might just be your RAM. Here at The Underground, we know how much you need your pc, or else how could we write for you? Here is a really helpful program that will allow you to check whether your RAM has a problem.

“Memtest86 is thorough, stand alone memory test for x86 architecture computers. BIOS based memory tests are a quick, cursory check and often miss many of the failures that are detected by Memtest86.”

To use the Memtest, you have to download it from their website: here

Memtest is free, however, if you dont know how to use or make bootable disks, you will have to buy it from them.

Ok, so, we want to help you avoid the costs. Download memtest and use a program like Nero or Sonic to burn the .iso file to a blank cd.

now, reboot your pc and go into the BIOS. you will have to change the boot order from Hard Drive or USB to CD. Save your changes, exit the BIOS, and insert the CD.
the pc should reboot by default, if not, restart yourself. the test should now run and it will tell you if there are errors on you RAM. the test takes various amounts of time depending on your PC.

This is what memtest looks like:

This is what memtest will show if you have errors. these are generalized, you might get different errors:

Here’s some proof that it works. When I built my pc, i experienced many restarts. i ran memtest and learned that my ram was faulty. now, i am posting this today to help those that need it. So, MemTest really does work. I replaced my RAM ASAP and now can play all the games I want and write articles for The Underground

Download MemTest here at: http://memtest86.com/download.html
