Old School Gaming – There Is No Shame

Revisions:
3-26-11: Initial release.

I said it once, and I will say it again. I love games, and more especially, I really love old school games. Why is that? Maybe its because I grew up on the 8-bit NES console (which I still have with 20 NES game cartridges) and since then I have seen a whole evolution of gaming. I have witness the SNES, SEGA Genesis, Dreamcast, XBox, PS1, PS2, PSP, Gameboy, and other high tech consoles.

What was interesting is that there are several groups of gamers todays: Those who enjoy playing old school games, and those that don’t.

It appears that if you talk to anyone who grew up with the Xbox or maybe the Xbox 360 era, none of them will have had the “pleasure” of playing the old school 8-bit NES games. After all, why would they? In their lifetime, they would never be exposed to it unless someone actively introduced them to old school gaming.

Although I do enjoy playing some of the newer games each and every year, old school games will always have a fond place in my heart. Some examples include:

  • Command and Conquer
  • Red Alert
  • Warcraft 1 and 2
  • Dune 2
  • Quake 1 and 2
  • Duke Nukem 3d
  • Doom 1 and 2
  • Wolfenstein 3d
  • Half Life 1
  • Unreal Tournament 1

and more. Let’s not forget all the steller games on the NES, SEGA, SNES, and N64 console. Each console has its gems too that many gamers of 2011 may have never ever played which is a shame.

I have read comments on Youtube before where they said they don’t want to play Minecraft because of its outdated graphics. Seriously, when does graphics make a game any good? Crysis 1 had mind blowing graphics, but the game still sucked you know. Story was poor, and boring.  Now Mario 1 has 8-bit graphics, but man, the gameplay was good!

There is a reason retro gaming is fun. Plus, I feel that games of today are not has hard as they used to be. Sure, Demon Souls and Ninja Gaiden 2 are hard as hell, but even the latest Halo games on the hardest mode doesn’t feel that hard.

If you want a game that will kick your ass, try Battletoads for the NES system. It will make you cry, guaranteed. 😛

Today on my GameDexterity account, I uploaded a CS 1.6 Tunngle tutorial video.  Someone made a comment that they were surprised people are still playing this game in 2011. Why is that? After all, people love CS and some love the 1.6 rather than the CS Source engine. If you want to see the tutorial, I have included it below:

[Tutorial] How to Play MAME Roms in Windows

xmen1.jpg

This tutorial is dedicated to underground user Wolf13. Without his request, this tutorial would not have been written.

Revisions:

4-7-09:  Added youtube videos for XP and Vista.

1-31-10: Removed youtube video links so I can redo them.  Added a new screenshot to clarify putting the ROM into the roms folder.

I was looking at this other thread, where I showed the game ending for the Arcade classic X-men 4 players. I noticed a commentor asking how does one play this game on the computer, which made me create today’s tutorial.

Check out this super easy tutorial, that will have you playing any kind of MAME roms on your computer! Today’s tutorial will only outline how to play the classic X-Men 4 player rom on your computer, but go ahead and feel free to explore with other roms. Technically, you can expand this tutorial to go play SNES, NES, N64, and even Sega Genesis. If you really need that tutorial, please leave a comment so I know! Thanks!

Assumptions:

1) You know how to use a computer.

2) You have an unzipping program. Get and install WinRar at www.rarlabs.com or get free utility 7Zip at www.7-zip.org.

******************

Tutorial:

1) Go to http://www.romnation.net They have a great selection for roms. To play MAME roms, you will need the emulator first. Get it here. Type in the verification code and download that emulator, it is about 7 MB.

2) Now you need a game. The X-Men Mame rom is located here.

3) Unzip your Mame emulator into its own folder on the desktop, or anywhere else you choose. Take the game you just downloaded from step 2, and proceed to cut and paste that entire archived file into the roms folder, located inside your Mame32v103. Then click on the Mame32 icon to launch the program.

xmen2.jpg

Below is a screenshot of what the content of the roms folder looks like. I literally put the xmen.zip file into the roms folder.

4) Go to File -> Audit all games. This command will now search your roms folder and see what games are available. Press ok when the audit is complete, and now notice that you see X-Men is in the main menu. (click thumbnail to enlarge)

xmen3.jpg

5) Double click the first line there for X-Men, and Zing! The game loads! Press tab to bring up the configuration menu. Go to “Input (for this game)” and there you can configure your controls. From the start, number 5 is your “Player 1 coin”, and left control, left alt, and spacebar are your action buttons. As usual, the arrow keys move your player around. Have fun!

xmen4.jpg

Now get your ass in gear and play this old school game! Don’t stop there, I highly recommend getting the Simpsons arcade game too. Enjoy! – Versatile1 for the win.

Playstation 2 Mod – Play SNES Games on the PS2!

For the record, I have tried this and it worked perfectly. Here is the lowdown:

If you have Swap magic, or some other kind of Playstation 2 mod, did you know you can play SNES roms on the Playstation 2? Yes, it can be done.

This is what you need to do.
Go to the official homepage of SNES station here.
There you can find the SNES station program. Download it and extract it if need be. From here, you need to get SNES roms. Go to your favorite rom site to find some SNES roms. I like to go to romnation.net

Once you have some roms, put them in a rom folder, and proceed to burn the SNES data files along with your ROM folder. Now boot the SNES disc with your swap magic, and you are good to go!

What I did actually was I searched demonoid.com torrents for a copy of SNES station, as this one guy has already made SNES station disc, with over 500 SNES roms. It is missing a few games, like some of the metroid games, but hell man, that saves you time downloading all those games. Did I mention all of this fits on a 700 MB disc? Yup. The only caveat to SNES station is that some games don’t work at all, or it skips or runs very slow. Well, its just an emulator, but games like Super Mario World 1 flys!

I found a youtube video that should show you what its like to use SNES station on your PS2. Yes, you can play SNES roms on your fat or slim ps2, just make sure you have the proper tools and mods.
