Revisions: 12-03-09: Initial release.

12-21-09: Made the whole tutorial a bit more simple.

[1-25-2010] Added Versatile1’s FMCB and the DVD decrypter tutorials.

INTRODUCTION:

The SEGA genesis was a fourth generation gaming console, which became extremely popular all around the world in the early 90’s. This tutorial is about playing SEGA on your ps2 with an Emulator called PGEN, with the assistance of ULaunchELF.

You will need:

1) A ps2, slim or fat.

2) A Modchip or Swap magic and The ULaunchELF CD.

Click Here to download the CD version of ULaunchELF.

Watch Versatile1’s DVD decrypter Video Tutorial, for a better understanding on how to burn the ULaunchELF CD.

(OR) A memory card exploited with Free Mcboot, which has ULaunchELF installed on it.

Watch Versatile1’s ‘How to install Free Mcboot’ Video Tutorial

4) A USB flashdrive or a USB External HD.

5) PGEN Emulator.

6) SEGA genesis roms. You could get them from romnation.net or by using p2p clients.

This is what you do next:

  • Format the USB media to FAT32.
  • Extract ‘pgen_codej_abcd_48.zip’, so that you will get a ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file.
  • Copy the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file to your USB media.
  • Copy the SEGA ROMs to your USB media.

That’s the picture of the contents of my USB media. As you can see, there is a ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file and a folder named ‘SEGA ROMS’ which contains all my SEGA ROMs.

  • Connect the USB media to the PS2’s USB port.
  • Now boot the ULaunchELF CD on your PS2, by using a mod chip or swap magic. (Free Mcboot users can load ULaunchELF from the Free Mcboot menu)

The ULaunchELF Browser controls:

Up and down to navigate through files or directories

O = Select file or directory

Triangle = Browse back or exit menu

  • Now, after you boot ULaunchELF, press the ‘O’ button to enter ‘FileBrowser‘. The following screen would appear…

  • Navigate to ‘mass’ and then press the ‘O’ button to select it.

You would be able to see the contents of your USB media, which includes the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ file and the ROM files.

  • Navigate to the ‘PGENCJ_ABCD_PATCH_48BIT.ELF’ and press the ‘O’ button.

PGEN will now load and the PGEN menu would get displayed.

NOTE: The background picture, which you will get, will be different.

PGEN Menu Controls:

Up/Down for navigation

‘X ‘ = Select or launch ROMs

Triangle = Browse back or exit menu

  • Select ‘Rom List’ by pressing the ‘X’ button.
  • In the next menu, Select the ‘Pendrive’ option.
  • Navigate to the SEGA ROMs and and select them by pressing ‘X’ and the ROM would load…

Default PGEN game controls:

Square = ‘a’, X = ‘b’, Circle = ‘c’, Select = PGEN menu (the PGEN menu includes a Memory Card save state option)

The up/down/left/right buttons and the start button retains the same functions of the SEGA genesis controller.

NOTE 1 : Once you have started playing a SEGA ROM, you could remove the ULaunchELF CD from your PS2 and hence save your lens from dying, or else the CD will keep spinning.

NOTE 2 : PGEN is also compatible with SEGA Master System ROMs.

That’s about everything. If you have any doubts leave a comment.

  1. Thanks for tutorial! From Argentina

  2. Thanks its really great;………….:)

  3. I downloaded genesis roms from emuparadise. I extracted them all and placed the extracted roms on my flash drive. Also have the pgen. Pgen runs fine but none of my roms show up when I select the sega folder. What’s wrong? Should I NOT have extracted the roms or do I have to make them a different type of file?? Thanks for the help.

    • Make the file names smaller and try again?

      • I actually got a different emulator, pgen 151 from sks and that one works (has sonic in the background, not like the one displayed tho). Although, I deleted all thoe zip files cuz I figured the unzipped ones would work (like the nes and snes ones did) but they dont. I WAS using 7zip but I dumped that and installed winRAR. And extracted winRAR files work. Just a trial and error thing I guess. Now i gotta RE-download the roms…..BOOOOO. Need to find a better SNES emu tho, the SNES STATION I have is pretty choppy on fast moving games. I ramble alot, haha.

  4. I’ve done all of this and it doesnt work. Should I NOT extract the Sega roms I download? When I go too the pendrive, I select my roms folder and the folder shows up again by itself on the next menu, click that and no roms appear, just blank box.

    • You not alone, I have ben trying almost every sega emu on skyapps and the ALL will boot up, BUT I HAVEN”T FOUND ONE! JUST ONE!! TO READ FROM PENDRIVE/ USB STICK!! I am familiar with emulators so this issue is a BIG PROBLEM only with the sega elf emulators for ps2. I have NO problem with nes/snes, just the sega’s. I think its time to find another website that handles elfs for sega more professionally 😦

      • This is an ectension to my reply. I FOUND OUT HOW TO GET YOUR PENDRIVE READABLE ON YOUR PS2!!!!!:) YOU HAVE TO LEAVE AN UNZIPPED/UNEXCTRACTED FILE IN THE ROOT DIRECTORY IN ORDER FOR THE EMULATOR TO READ- ALSO IT MUST BE THE PATCHED PGEN VERSION AS THE AUTHOR OF THIS PAGE HAS INSTRUCTED!!! I TOOK 7-8HOURS OUT OF MY LIFE TO FINALLY SOLVE THIS ISSUE. PLEASE REFFER OTHERS TO THIS COMMENT IF THEY CAN”T FIND THEIR ROMS ON THE ROMLIST PENDRIVE/ USB STICK

      • the one I got from sks works fine. Didn’t need to do anything special for it to work. the snes station I have tho is kinda bunk. The audio is horrible and some roms don’t work at all, some work for a bit and then the screen starts to flicker and do crazy shizz.

  5. Hey this works great for me thanks! I have a question though. Is there any way to get 32X games to load on this emulator?

  6. Pretty sure each system has its own seperate emu. Basically from what I understand, is if the original system takes cartridge games, there’s an emu for it. Just gotta find a tutorial on the installation. Sksapps has the emu’s.

  7. I do not leave a leave a response, however after looking at through a few of the remarks here [How To] Play SEGA on
PS2 using ULaunchELF. | Welcome to the Underground.. I do have 2 questions for you if
it’s allright. Could it be simply me or does it give the impression like some of these comments come across as if they are coming from brain dead folks? 😛 And, if you are writing on additional online social sites, I would like to follow everything fresh you have to post. Could you post a list of all of your social sites like your linkedin profile, Facebook page or twitter feed?

  8. thx thx thx u’re the best
